Zion NP : 28-29 Nov '12. Part of the 5-day hectic trip with Bingram. Reliable steady weather this time of year, no crowds anywhere. The downside is that days are shorter, and the vegation is somewhat subdued, which makes some places less lively and colorful. Still, it was a fabulous escape from drab Seattle.

Amsterdam : June '12. Got to spend a week in Amsterdam on a work-vacation visit. The work excuse was TechEd Europe, joining a bunch of people from the System Center team. Between the show duties and distractions and trying to do my regular work remotely, I didn't have a lot of free time to explore around, and the weather was more crummy than nice, but I still got a good taste for the city, and on the last day ventured outside (next album).

Church Mountain : 24 Sep '11. This was a decent end-of-summer hike. Surprising to see wildflowers blooming so late. Weather and the views were great, in spite of some clouds. Guye Peak, at Snoqualmie Pass : 24 Nov '10. Got tempted to take the day off work and enjoy the fresh dumping of snow in the mountain. It was a wonderland with feet of untouched snow and generously covered fir trees. Add another snow enthusiast and his hardy dog, some steepness for challenge, and an action- and fun-filled mini-adventure was guaranteed.

The Enchantments : 1-3 Oct '10. Enchantment Lakes: No doubt the yellowest, awesomest place in this state, and much beyond. Finally got to see it--and in great weather and with a fine bunch of friends (appropriately hardy & crazy for the purpose)--after years of permit mishaps, work situations, or something else getting in the way. Fabulous ending of the hiking season, with a big, yellow bang. :-)

Boston Basin : 25 Aug '10. This is one of the awesomest places I've seen. About 20 miles east of Marblemount, WA. A somewhat obscure, rough, steep trail leads to this spectacular basin, full of color and surrounded by snowy jagged peaks. Reaching the base of the glacier was particularly rewarding. We enjoyed perfect weather, probably the best day in September.

4th of July '10 : Climbed a 6000 ft mountain with a bunch of friends and coworkers, put the American flag at the top, got to touch snow, enjoyed late afternoon sunshine while resting at the Lake Wenatchee shore, had dinner at the fascinating '59er Diner on Hwy 2, and got back just in time for the fireworks in Bellevue. Cascade Pass snowshoeing : 2 May '10. Trying to take advantage of the snow while it lasts... Due to widespread rain this weekend, it took more driving than originally planned, but we managed to stay above the rain and put the snowshoes to good use. The goal was to climb to Cascade Pass, which is about 25 miles to the east of Marblemount. A fine route in theory, with promise of great views, but the snow was heavy, still deep, and somewhat unstable, and the slope too steep, so we didn't make it very far. Still, we enjoyed the surrounding scenery, under partial clouds. The real fun began with the launch of a handmade mini-avalanche and culminated with some epic glissading on the way back, leaving the originally pristine snow face of the mountain completely torn up, as if by a real avalanche. There were a couple of mishaps on the way down, and unfortunately Andrzej's tailbone will not be left with happy memory, but overall a pretty rewarding venture. Oh, and we came upon a decent size black bear while driving up the mountain, which like everything else that day was not included in the original script but added to the excitement.

Baldy Mtn snowshoe : 21 Feb '10. A strenuous snowshoe climb up Mt Baldy rewarded us with fabulous views of Cle Elum lake, the Stuart range, and of course Mt.Rainier to the south. This area never disappoints. And what a contrast to the premature spring we are reluctantly enjoying down in the city. Thanks to Michael for organizing this great trip.

Heliotrope Ridge (Mt.Baker) : 13 Sep '09. We approached the north side of Mt.Baker's Coleman Glacier over Heliotrope Ridge. Not a long hike, but pretty exciting--and really challenging in places--due to the need to ford several fast-moving and deeply-refreshingly-cold creeks. The reward at the end was great, though.

Space Elevator presentation : 15 Aug '09. Attended a presentation on the Space Elevator concept. Second year in a row, Microsoft hosts an international conference on the topic. It seems people are starting to talk more and more seriously about the idea, even though feasibility is still only theoretical. It is a pretty fascinating idea, and it does sound like 'the next big thing'. In the meantime, some more pragmatically oriented people are eager to exploit carbon nanotubes and related products for various terrestrial applications.

Kayaking to Bill Gates' house : 9 Aug '09. The plan was really just to get in the water and explore Kirkland's lakeshore, but somehow the idea of finding Bill's house became too irresistible, even though the distance seemed somewhat discouraging. With the help of a mobile phone and a GPS receiver we found the coordinates of the target and zeroed in on it. Unfortunately, we did not get a welcoming tea & cookies reception at the destination. Instead, a security guard followed us paddle around with a stern look. But, still, it was a rewarding pilgrimage for two faithful servants of the Empire.

Davis Peak and beyond : 4 July '09. What a better way to celebrate our independence than to take another peak? :-) This was Jay's plan. The hot weather forecast made me think twice, but it was hard to resist the allure of the area (Salmon La Sac, next to the Teanaway), some off-trail exploration and chilly alpine lakes. Indeed, it was an exhausting and knee-beating 12 miles roundtrip--and all worthwhile.

Bean Peak scramble : 20 June '09. Did a rare off-trail venture, to a rocky peak in the never-disappointing Teanaway area. We had perfect weather. It was cool for the climb and just warm enough at the top. The scramble to Bean Peak was relatively mellow and didn't feel long at all. The views were awesome: jagged, snow-covered peaks in all directions, just enough clouds for more interesting pictures.

Shi-Shi Beach : May 1-3 '09. A trip with a bunch of people from the Seattle Backpackers Meetup to Shi-Shi Beach - one of the most scenic stretches of the Olympic peninsula shore. The forecast was for heavy rain that weekend, but most people were undeterred. In fact, thanks to the "bad" weather we got a fairly interesting variety of atmospheric effects and unique scenes. Only my expensive camera didn't enjoy it as much, but it held up well.

Hex Mountain : 28 Feb '08. An eagerly anticipated snowshoe hike after a fresh snowfall in the mountains and yet another overly intense workweek... The sun did not cooperate, but we still had a good time. We met a couple of other parties at the trailhead and up the mountain. Everyone seemed to be looking for the right trail, including us. We ended up approaching the peak from a lower ridge on the west side, which was a little longer but not as steep as the 'summer trail', which is (probably!) the one we used to get back.

Carne Mountain : 13 Oct '08. In pursuit of inspiring yellow views... Carne Mountain rises to over 7000 ft in the Mount Baker National Forest, about 35 miles north of Leavenworth, WA. We had the perfect day hike: crisp & dry air, plenty of sunshine, sweetly yellow larch trees standing out sharply against the backdrop of jagged peaks and fresh snowfall. It was a long drive from Seattle, but we didn't leave very early, and it was totally worthwhile. Oh, and we had a very lively and lovely companion--Matt's dog.

Mount Adams : 13-14 Sep '08. After two years of deliberation, finally got around to climbing Mount Adams. I went with my coworkers Eddie and Ryan. The climb was somewhat grueling due to the distance and roughness of the terrain, but definitely worthwhile. We caught the last weekend of nice weather in September. On the downside, there wasn't enough good snow left for glissading, which seems to be the biggest draw for many people, but we had our big highlight by taking a 'shortcut' through the glacier near the false summit...

Anacortes, kayaking : 31 Aug '08. After my climbing plan for the Labor Day weekend fell through unexpectedly, I made a quickly planned getaway with Bingram and Veronica to Anacortes, WA. We went on a guided kayaking tour around Burrows Island, which is just to the west of Fidalgo Island (on which Anacortes sits). We enjoyed nice weather, picturesque marina & water views, some old town charm, calm water, and good food.

Lake Serene : 9 Aug '08. A surprisingly rewarding hike not far from Seattle, on a not-so-promising day weather-wise. Lake Serene is reachable via a 3.5 mile somewhat steep trail starting just a little off SR-2 in Index, WA. Since it was a drab and occasionally wet day, there weren't too many people on the trail. But the woods spared us from getting wet, and we enjoyed some great scenery around the lake, with a surprising amount of snow left from last winter--at < 2300 ft elevation!

Goat Lake : 6 July '08. Goat Lake is nestled in a beautiful cirque off the Mountain Loop Highway, just a few miles past Barlow Pass. This was supposed to be a July 4th calorie burn-off hike. ;-) It wasn't challenging but good length: we did 11-12 miles roundtrip, with some scrambling around the lake. The sun decided to sleep in that Sunday, but that only made the light effects around the lake more interesting.

Ingalls Trail : 7 June '08. Got together a bunch of coworkers and old hiking buddies for a day hike in eastern WA. The trail follows Ingalls Creek, which is at the SE end of the Alpine Lakes Wilderness. The creek was full and roaring due to the snowmelt higher in the mountain. A variety of wildflowers were blooming all along the trail. We had dry and mostly sunny weather all day. This was a welcome change of scenery, especially after ten days of hardly any sunshine in Seattle.

Boulder River trail + Darrington, Kirkland : 4 May '08. A day hike with Veronica and my coworker Bart. The Boulder River trail is near Darrington, WA. The highlight of the trail are two pretty high and full waterfalls--pretty impressive. After the hike, we had dinner in Darrington and then enjoyed the sunset at the Kirkland marina.

Sauk Mountain : 22 March '08. This will remain my best snowshoe hike for the winter. Everything was great. We had the mountain pretty much to ourselves. Heaps of pristine snow. Warm, dry weather with good sunshine. Very nice folks. And one perpetual motion dog. An avalanche chute stopped us from reaching the peak, but we had enough of a workout already breaking trail.

Tree Lighting in Leavenworth : 1 Dec '07. Leavenworth is a small town on the east side of the Cascades, over Stevens Pass. They've been developing the image of an "alpine Bavarian village" for about 40 years and thus managed to make it a pretty popular tourist destination. Their Christmas tree lighting ceremony, in particular, has been getting very popular in recent years. I joined a group of people on a day trip to see it. With the fresh snowfall, the fine decorations and lights, and the crowds in the streets, it definitely felt very festive, even "authentic". Driving back through Stevens Pass was a different story, but with the help of tire chains and a lot of patience, we made it safely.

River rafting and camping at Tieton River : 22 Sep '07. I went on a weekend trip with the same Meetup group as the July whitewater rafting. This time it was far from wild (although the other raft somehow flipped over), but with the camping experience it was pretty nice. Tieton River flows east of the Cascades, toward Yakima, WA. It is dammed, so usually it is more like a creek, but they release a lot of water this time of year, and it becomes (supposedly) Class 3 for rafting.

Lopez Island bike tour : 18 Aug '07. Went on a bike tour of Lopez Island with one of the Meetup groups. Beforehand, I knew only a couple of the people. This was a good way to make more friends. Lopez is supposed to be the flattest of the San Juan Islands, with only "gently rolling hills", but there was quite a bit of pedaling to do, and the less prepared found it too much for one day. (We did about 25 miles roundtrip.) It was a cloudy day, which helped with the biking and saved us from getting sunburnt, but it wasn't great for pictures. The experience was all worthwhile, though.

Kendall Katwalk (PCT) : 11 Aug '07. We hiked a section of the Pactific Crest Trail near Snoqualmie Pass called Kendall Katwalk. Parts of the trail were blasted into a steep rock face, hence "catwalk". It was a gorgeous day, and the views were awesome.

Paddling in Baja California (Mexico) : 28 Jan - 4 Feb 2007. I thought I needed to get away from the typical dreary Seattle weather this time of year... I wasn't even thinking about Mexico, but I chanced upon this guided sea kayaking tour (organized by a Canadian outfit called Pacific Rim Paddling), and it sounded like the perfect getaway for me: an outdoor/wilderness experience, a bit of an adventure, sun & water. And indeed, it proved to be totally worthwhile...

Lichtenwasser Lake : Dec 31st... What better idea than a snowshoe hike? :-) This is a little off Stevens Pass. The weather was crisp, with good light for pictures, tons of fresh, pristine snow!.. It was a lot of fun, especially coming down the hill with the snowshoes. The snow felt like mashed potatoes, almost *fluid* underneath your feet. :-) In the end most of us got wet and started shivering, but it was all worthwhile.

Las Vegas & Grand Canyon trip : Едноседмична екскурзия с Мартин преди Коледа. И двамата беше ни налегнала неприятна зима (при мен мокра и мрачна, при тях повече студена) и затова наюг изглеждаше подходяща посока. Аз бях ходил по тези места преди две години (с Антон, моя познат руснака от B.U.), но реших че Grand Canyon си заслужава да се повтори, този път и Мартин да го виде що за чудо е. Las Vegas е най-близкото място за долитане и така естествено влезе в маршрута ни.

Olympic loop : 21-26 May '06

Мартин ми идва на гости и си направихме пълна обиколка на Olympic Peninsula. Миналата есен бяхме стигнали само до средата на северната част. Този път за по-интересно подходиме през Whidbey Island (от североизток). Има добри връзки с фериботи между повечето съседни острови и останалата суша наоколо. С времето хич не случихме: беше предимно мрачно и мокро цялата седмица. Но все пак доста неща видяхме и като цяло добре се получи. Имаше само едно непредвидено приключение като тръгнахме да си правим поход в планината...
