Chango  > Events > Space Elevator presentation
15 Aug '09. Attended a presentation on the Space Elevator concept. Second year in a row, Microsoft hosts an international conference on the topic. It seems people are starting to talk more and more seriously about the idea, even though feasibility is still only theoretical. It is a pretty fascinating idea, and it does sound like 'the next big thing'. In the meantime, some more pragmatically oriented people are eager to exploit carbon nanotubes and related products for various terrestrial applications.

Chango > A sample of carbon nanotube strands. Since manufacturing methods are still in early development, strength & volume are too far from what's needed for the elevator. The end goal would be to produce a 62,000 mile ribbon, sheet-thin but over a foot wide!
